Bright, crisp and CLEAN!
Bright, crisp and CLEAN!
Inspired by the beauty and enduring spirit of the Oregon Coast, “Sand Dune” reflects a time of connection and resilience. During the pandemic, we found solace in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean and the simple joys of coastal living. This Chardonnay, sourced from a renowned Dundee Hills vineyard, captures the essence of those cherished memories – a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us and the strength of the human spirit. The label, featuring a stunning photograph by my wife Jen, evokes the feeling of freedom and the interconnectedness we discovered during that time.
In Jen’s words: “Sand Dune was taken from the top of the big sand dune in Cape Kiwanda (Pacific City, Oregon Coast). I had seen some photographs of another Haystack Rock that wasn’t in Cannon Beach and tracked it down on Instagram. Turns out, the Haystack Rock in Pacific City is actually the larger of the two, but it’s farther out in the water.
I had booked a night away for myself in Bandon and hoped to explore down there a bit, but I stopped by Pacific City on the way. It was amazing, and I spent way more time there than I meant to and got to Bandon after sunset.
Cape Kiwanda is absolutely insane. There is a gigantic dune and at the top you can walk around and see forever. A company had sent me some products in exchange for taking photos of them out in the wild. So I spent most of my time running around doing that. But I saw the surfer walking and snapped a few shots of him. And, Sand Dune.”
Our Chardonnay philosophy centers on achieving a delicate balance, a graceful midpoint between the opulent, heavily oaked California styles and the lean, flinty elegance of White Burgundy. We believe in allowing the inherent character of the wine – its vibrant fruit, refreshing acidity, and underlying structure – to take center stage. The judicious use of high-quality, often neutral or lightly toasted oak is intentional, providing a subtle whisper of sweetness that coaxes out nuanced vanilla and gentle spice notes, enhancing rather than overpowering the wine’s natural expression.
For me, a truly refined Chardonnay offers a delightful and lingering freshness. Imagine sitting on your porch, overlooking a sun-drenched vineyard or perhaps a tranquil lakeside view. The ideal Chardonnay should cleanse the palate with a pleasant crispness, leaving you with a sense of revitalization, inviting another sip. It shouldn’t assault your senses with an overwhelming blast of oak, nor should it finish with the flat, slightly metallic tang of stale bubbles. Instead, it should be a harmonious experience, where the fruit sings, the acidity dances, and the oak provides a gentle, supportive framework, ultimately leaving you feeling refreshed and connected to the moment’s beauty, much like the serene landscape before you.
