An enchanting Dundee Hill Pinot Noir
An enchanting Dundee Hill Pinot Noir
Inspired by the breathtaking beauty and challenge of the Enchantments, a hike undertaken by our wives in the Pacific Northwest, this Pinot Noir captures the essence of adventure and exploration. The photo on the label, taken by my wife Jen, reflects the spirit of this remarkable wine. This is where Alpine Lakes was born. Harvested at peak ripeness, the grapes were carefully destemmed and underwent a gentle cold soak to extract vibrant color and aromas. Fermentation occurred in small, temperature-controlled tanks, allowing for the full expression of the fruit character.
“Alpine Lakes was taken in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness on the way into the Enchantments. Specifically, it looks out across Colchuck Lake from the boulder field leading to Aasgard Pass.
We assumed we would never win the (overnight) lottery, so we did the thru-hike (20 miles in one day!). Very intense, very beautiful, very ‘hurty’ the next day. And then coincidentally, two years later, the first time I entered the lottery, I got a spot! And went back with my friends Kim and Autumn. Spending a few nights there with (almost) no other people around was terrific.” – Jen Bybee, Photographer.
I was sifting through Jen’s photos and came across this striking photo that tricks your mind. It looked like “musical waves” of some kind, but after looking more closely, you can see it is trees in a reflection. The fruit came to us by surprise, and I remember Jen being surprised when she and her friends got the lottery ticket to camp on the Enchantments. Hence, it was a perfect marriage between photo and wine.
Alpine Lakes is from the Dundee Hills, one of the most sought-after sub AVAs in the Willamette Valley. It is one of my favorites, as it reminds me more of my trips to Burgundy. They have a graceful and elegant character, often showcasing vibrant red fruit notes like cherry, raspberry, and cranberry that are both fresh and inviting. The region’s volcanic Jory soils contribute a distinctive minerality, often described as earthy or subtly dusty, adding complexity and a sense of place.
These wines typically possess a bright, refreshing acidity that keeps them lively and balanced. The tannins are usually silky and well-integrated, providing structure without being aggressive, leading to a smooth and refined mouthfeel. This harmonious combination of bright fruit, elegant structure, intriguing minerality, and refreshing acidity makes Dundee Hills Pinot Noir so captivating and enjoyable for me.
